Xinhua News Agency, Hohhot, April 28 (Reporter Wang Xuebing) What can be done with coal gangue, once called "waste"? It can be "pulled" into hair-thin glass fibers, turned into pipes, doors and windows, and used in wind turbine blades and new energy vehicles to empower high-end equipment manufacturing.

In the production workshop of Inner Mongolia Tianhao Fiberglass Co., Ltd. located in Horinger County, Hohhot City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, shiny white glass fibers are cooled and wound into rolls. It is unimaginable that these high-performance materials that support the development of key areas were formerly abandoned black coal gangue.

Coal gangue is a solid waste produced during coal mining and coal washing. It has complex composition and is difficult to dispose of. The past treatment method of landfill not only occupied a large amount of land resources, but also easily caused the precipitation of heavy metals and acidic substances, affecting the safety of the ecological environment. The large-scale and resource-based treatment of coal gangue has always been a key point and difficulty in the industry, and it is also the key to the green transformation of the industry and the innovation and upgrading of the regional economy.

The "transformation" of coal gangue into glass fiber not only realizes the reuse of waste materials, but also doubles its value and empowers industrial upgrading. It is also a vivid portrayal of Horinger County relying on technological innovation to build a high-end new material industry system, turning industrial solid waste into treasure, assisting green and low-carbon development, and writing a circular economy.

In the Tianhao fiberglass production workshop, black coal gangue is undergoing a "gorgeous transformation" with the help of pure oxygen top-fired electric boosting tank kiln technology and full-process intelligent storage control and automated batching and sorting systems.

"Coal gangue was once the "black baggage" after coal mining, but through technological innovation, we have turned it into a high value-added fiberglass raw material." Liu Lingxia, general manager of Inner Mongolia Tianhao Glass Fiber Co., Ltd., said that not all coal gangue can be "transformed." First, raw materials containing stable aluminum and silicon components must be selected, and then passed through the "triple checkpoints" of X-ray, AI vision and laboratory testing. Subsequently, the coal gangue that passed the inspection was "reborn" at a high temperature of 1,200 degrees Celsius, and was then drawn through a platinum-rhodium leakage plate for one second. After cooling, it became glass fiber with a diameter of only one-tenth of a hair. "Producing fiberglass that is stronger than equivalent steel bars and weighs only one-quarter of the weight."

""Waste" is just a misplaced resource. Traditional glass fiber production relies on natural ores such as kaolin, and the carbon emissions in the mining and melting processes are high; while coal gangue itself contains carbon. After the process is optimized, its own combustion calorific value can be used to replace part of the energy required for melting, and its active ingredients can be used to prepare glass fiber." Liu Lingxia said,\ "As a result, carbon emissions are reduced by 60% compared with traditional processes, and raw material costs are halved, which not only consumes solid waste but also reduces production costs, achieving a win-win situation for both ecological and economic benefits." With the official start-up of Line 3 of the second phase of Tianhao Glass Fiber"s annual 600,000-ton high-performance glass fiber production base, this "Stone Metamorphosis Story" has added a new chapter. At present, the company"s annual production capacity has reached 420,000 tons, and the production and sales rate of the first-phase 120,000-ton production line has reached 100%.

Nowadays, the results of coal gangue "deformation" have been widely implemented. Fiberglass products have been used in the transformation of underground pipe networks due to their significant advantages in acid and alkali resistance, corrosion resistance, lightweight design, and cost control. Over 100 kilometers of fiberglass pipe products have been used in the renovation of old residential areas and rainwater and sewage diversion projects in Hohhot. In addition, fiberglass frames are gradually replacing traditional aluminum alloy materials in photovoltaic installations, especially suitable for harsh scenarios such as offshore photovoltaics. Glass fiber reinforced doors and windows are also widely used in urban green transformation, and the high value-added utilization of coal gangue continues to extend.

From coal gangue in the mine, to glass fiber in smart production lines, to high-end materials, the reshaping of "stone" is a vivid epitome of Horinger County"s promotion of solid waste resources and high-end industries. "Next step, we will focus on cultivating the growth pole of the new materials industry, using the Yungu New Industrial Park as a carrier, to promote the completion of the second phase of Tianhao Glass Fiber and the start of construction of the third phase of high modulus fiberglass factories, fiberglass products factories and fiberglass downstream projects, continue to expand the scale of high-quality fiberglass production capacity, and accelerate the transformation from "drawing and selling silk" to "turning silk into gold."" said Li Liuxiao, Secretary of the Horinger County Party Committee.
